Fish oil is an oil from the tissues of an oily fish.

It is not the fish itself that produce the omega-3 fatty acids, but what the fish consumes in when feeding on microalgae. Small fish like sardines or any predatory fish get eaten by prey fish and the prey fish then gains the omega-3 fatty acids.

Such prey fish includes, salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, and mackerel may be high in the omega-3 fatty acids since they are the fish at the top of the food chain.
It is said that more pure the water is, that the fish comes from, the higher the rate of omega-3 fatty acids is in the fish.
